HU services the community

27 Oct

Last Saturday Hampton University and Verizon Wireless teamed up together in a partnership that revitalized the North Phoebus Community Center located on Chamberlin Avenue in Hampton.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. HU students worked with neighborhood children who attend the center, to help beautify the grounds.

Landscaping efforts at the center included building new flower beds around the property, cleaning debris, weeds and revitalizing the center’s basketball court. Another effort was revitalization of the center’s community vegetable garden.

Through Verizon Wireless, HU students who participated in the effort were automatically eligible to win one of five $1,000 scholarships (administered through the United Negro College Fund), Droid X by Motorola or a Samsung N150 netbook.

Jasmine Pleasant, a sophomore, 5 year – mba major from California said that Hampton students really worked hard and together to give back to the community.

“There’s something about helping others that gives us validation in who we are as people,” Pleasant said.

Present were many organizations from Hampton University, including the Student Leadership Program, Psi Chi National Honors Society, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and more.

There was great music and food as well as the event turned out to be a success! Scroll down to view more pictures from this event!
